Snakes are on the move again
Our course superintendent Stu tells us that snakes are on the move again. As the season when they are most active is fast approaching us, it is a reminder that golf courses provide a perfect habitat. Here is the latest info on what to do and don’t do. DO NOT try to catch, kill, or identify the snake!!! This is important. In hospital we NO LONGER NEED to know the type of snake; it doesn’t change treatment.
Driving Range Etiquette
A number of people have been observed hitting from the grass area directly in front of the synthetic hitting mats when the synthetic hitting mats are in use. We’d like to remind members & guests that this is not permitted. For those who are perhaps unaware – per the picture, the synthetic hitting mats that we have installed are specifically designed to accommodate the use of driver tees simply by inserting your tee into the mat.
Winter Course Maintenance
During the winter ‘non-growing’ season it’s more important than ever for Members to help our Grounds staff to maintain the course. Because divots take longer to ‘grow in’ at this time, it’s crucial that divots are filled in with sand. Similarly, please take the time to repair your pitch marks on the greens. And for that extra dose of good karma, when you have your sand bucket and pitch repair tool in hand, take the time to repair another divot/pitch mark or two that are nearby.
Sandy Waste
The Sandy waste area is due to have the first section from the 7th tee to the end of the conservation area opened very shortly once we do a final tidy up and mark the hazard. The old wasteland between the 7th green and the 8th tee will follow after that once we get the chance to complete the shaping, turf the mounds, and spread the sand.
Bunker Rakes
You may or may not have noticed the green chief style rakes have been placed out on all the front 9 bunkers with heavy ones removed for repair. The back 9 will be done as well once we receive another shipment of the rakes.
Our Links to the “Home of Golf”
Our Club Vice Captain Andy Meldrum explores a few of the similarities between the Old Course at St Andrews which hosted the 150th edition of The Open Championship, and our own course here at Maroochy River.
Wet Weather
Our Course Superintendent was having a look at the rainfall figures from previous years and he found some interesting facts. The figures are a comparison between 1999 which is the wettest year from our figures at Horton Park and our current year to date.
Ladies Gardening Group
We are looking for more ladies to join our gardening group. We have made the decision to get together on the last Friday of each month. We are also on the lookout for donations of used pots.
9th Fairway Renovation
It’s obvious the Fairway is still struggling with the salinity levels and looks a lot worse since the recent flood. We have begun a plan to give the fairway more attention.
Melaleuca trees defoliated
You may have noticed some on course Melaleuca trees have been significantly defoliated to the point of looking dead. However, they aren’t dead they were attacked by sawflies or spitfire caterpillars.
